Sustainable Approaches to Agricultural Pest Control and its Management

A pest is any organism that poses a threat to humans, crops, livestock, or property. The term encompasses a wide range of organisms, including nematodes, insects, weeds, molluscs, bacteria, fungi, phytoplasmas, viruses, and viroids. Organisms associated with plants may exhibit relationships that range from mutualism, where both partners benefit, to parasitism or predation, where the plant is harmed. As crops were introduced and cultivated in different parts of the world, many of their associated pathogens spread along with them. Furthermore, these crops encountered new pathogens and predators in their adopted environments, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. The development and severity of plant diseases are commonly explained by the disease triangle, which emphasizes the interaction among a susceptible host, a virulent pathogen, and environmental conditions favourable for disease establishment and spread.
Effective pest management requires continuous monitoring of pest populations to evaluate the performance of forecasting systems and control measures. Pest control strategies are generally divided into two main categories: preventive and curative approaches. Preventive measures are designed to reduce the chances of pest infestation or lessen the impact of pest-host interactions before damage occurs. Curative measures, on the other hand, are implemented after infestation and aim to suppress or eliminate existing pest populations. Both approaches are based on the fundamental principles of exclusion, avoidance, protection, and eradication, and can be achieved through a combination of regulatory, physical, cultural, biological, and chemical methods to ensure effective and sustainable pest management.
