Classical to Post-modern Discourse on Applied Geomorphological Studies

Applied geomorphology has undergone a significant transformation over the past century, evolving from a descriptive and deterministic discipline into an interdisciplinary field that integrates environmental science, policy, and stakeholder participation. Classical geomorphological studies primarily emphasized landform description, process analysis, and engineering applications through objective scientific methods. Advances in quantitative techniques, systems theory, remote sensing, and computational modelling gradually expanded the discipline beyond traditional landscape interpretation. More recently, post-modern perspectives have challenged the assumption that scientific knowledge alone is sufficient for solving complex environmental problems. Contemporary applied geomorphology increasingly recognizes uncertainty, multiple knowledge systems, participatory governance, and the co-production of scientific knowledge. This paradigm shift has strengthened the role of geomorphology in addressing climate change adaptation, watershed management, disaster risk reduction, urban development, and sustainable environmental planning. Modern approaches combine quantitative modelling with qualitative assessments, scenario analysis, and stakeholder engagement to support evidence-based decision making. The transition from classical to post-modern discourse reflects broader developments in environmental science, emphasizing flexibility, resilience, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adaptive management. This paper reviews the historical evolution of applied geomorphology, examines the theoretical and methodological changes that have shaped the discipline, and discusses the implications of these developments for research, policy, and environmental management.
